Let the past decade guide us into the future
After 2015, everything moved quickly. Soilfood began providing side-stream management services to industry and launched the refinement of agricultural production inputs.
The agricultural market served as a springboard, and product development accelerated. Limes, fertilisers and soil improvement fibres took centre stage. All operations were geared toward improving soil health and enabling more sustainable food production.
Growth gained momentum. A market for recycled fertilisers was created in Finland — and it continues to expand. At the same time, new circular economy products were developed for industrial applications.
Materials once referred to as waste were productised into high-quality circular economy solutions that stand comparison with virgin alternatives.
Today, Soilfood is a Nordic circular economy company.
The planetary boundaries remind us why our work is urgent.
Seven out of the nine planetary boundaries that measure the Earth’s carrying capacity have already been exceeded. These include climate change and the biogeochemical cycles of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus. By staying within these boundaries, we help ensure a liveable planet for future generations. Soilfood’s circular economy solutions are one way to drive this transition.
Our story
At the beginning, there was a desire to change the world and courage to challenge conventional ways.
Today we are a leading industry player in the Nordic countries. And ready to challenge the rest of the world to join us.
2009 Eljas Jokinen starts recycling the side streams of biogas and bioethanol plants. His company imports sludge spreading equipment and offers spreading services for farms.
2008 Ilkka Herlin and Saara Kankaanrinta founded the Baltic Sea Action Group, which focuses on protection of the Baltic Sea. In 2014, they acquired the Qvidja farm from Parais, where the land has been cultivated for over a thousand years. 2015 they founded Soilfood.
2010 Juuso Joona starts utilizing soil improvement fibers on his farm in Joutseno, in fields where decades of over fertilization and forceful tilling of the land had depleted the soil. Soon the neighbours also wanted to try the products. So, he started a company.
2016 Soilfood’s current business model started when Jokinen’s and Joona’s companies are merged to Soilfood.

2018 launch of Soilfood Boost fertilizers, and 2019 launch of Soilfood Lime product range for farms.
2020 Soilfood Ab is founded to Sweden.

2021 revenue over 10 M€, and 2022 the limit of one million utilized product tons is reached.

2023 launch of Soilfood Newera recycled materials for industry.
Why choose Soilfood and circular economy solutions?
The impacts of climate change, biodiversity loss and the depletion of natural resources are already visible in everyday life — across societies, industry and primary production. A changing environment increases pressure, but at the same time it accelerates the development of sustainable, profitable and resource-efficient solutions.
Soilfood’s solutions are built on the principles of the circular economy. We replace the traditional “take – make – dispose” model with solutions where industrial side streams are refined back into productive use. In this way, materials are used more wisely and for longer, and dependence on virgin natural resources is reduced. For us, the circular economy is not an alternative — it is our way of operating.
As a Finnish company, we operate in one of the world’s leading countries in circular economy development. Investments in expertise, research and collaboration have resulted in solutions that can be scaled and replicated — also globally.
At the core of our strategy are the customer and competitiveness.
Soilfood serves both agriculture and industry with recycled products and recycled raw materials. We increase the value and refinement rate of industrial side streams and build competitive circular economy solutions. Our goal is to offer the most attractive circular economy services and products on the market.
